Without a doubt, new technologies offer exciting opportunities to supercharge personalised feedback at scale. But beyond the hype, what are critical considerations for ensuring feedback effectiveness?
This year, the International Learning Analytics and Knowledge conference (LAK26) was held in beautiful Bergen, Norway, where CIC’s Lisa-Angelique Lim, together with an international group of feedback experts — Rafael Ferreira Mello, Yi-Shan Tsai, and Joshua Weidlich — co-led the 4th Personalising Feedback at Scale workshop.
The previous three LAK workshops in this series explored tools, impact, and the educator experience of feedback grounded in learning analytics (LA). This year, the workshop shifted focus: looking back on how far personalised feedback based on LA has come, while opening up dialogue on the fundamental considerations that should shape its future in an increasingly AI-enhanced landscape. As with previous workshop offerings, this workshop was well-attended by a diverse group of participants ranging from graduate researchers, to practitioners, and developers.
Across the half-day session, participants heard from the workshop chairs and peers on cutting-edge developments in personalised feedback. These presentations were interspersed with small group discussions structured around three critical considerations:
- Measuring feedback impact: how can we know whether personalised feedback is effective?
- Understanding student feedback engagement patterns: what does meaningful engagement with feedback actually look like?
- Reconceptualising feedback literacy: what do students and teachers alike need to navigate feedback in an AI-enhanced landscape?
The workshop closed with a synthesis activity, where participants distilled their discussions into practical ideas for advancing personalised feedback powered by learning analytics and generative AI, carrying forward the three pivotal issues explored throughout the session.
