CIC’s Dr. Roberto Martinez-Maldonado attended the 28th Australian Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (OzCHI 2016) in Launceston, Tasmania. The conference theme “Connected Futures” highlighted the importance of connectedness through technology. OzCHI is an annual conference for the Computer-Human Interaction Special Interest Group (CHISIG) which is one of the leading forums for the latest in HCI research and practice in the Asia-Pacific area. The conference brought together an international community of researchers, industry practitioners, academics and students. Participants came from a range of backgrounds, including interface designers, user experience (UX) practitioners, information architects, software engineers, human factors experts, information systems analysts and social scientists.
The conference featured quite a few international outstanding research figures. For example, Dr. Kwan-Liu Ma form UC Davis was the first keynote speaker. He explained approaches to perform scientific storytelling through visualisations. Professor Kun-Pyo Lee from KAIST, South Korea, was the second keynote speaker. He talked about the new wave in design: Design 3.0 or “designing for empowering”.
The panels were also very interesting. For example, the second panel featured Paul Dourish , Mark Billinghurst, Oliver Weidhich, Lian Loke and our very own UTS’ Elise van den Hoven.

There was a strong UTS presence in the conference, with more than half of Elise Van den Hoven’s students attending and presenting multiple papers. Also other UTS academics attended the conference from the Creativity and Cognition Studies (including Andrew Johnston) and the Interaction Design and Human Practice Laboratory (including Tuck Wah Leong).
Roberto presented a full paper titled “CoCoDes: Multi-device Support for Collocated Collaborative Learning Design” which he co-authored with Professor Peter Goodyear.
