Collaborate with CIC

I'm in UTS, and want to collaborate with CIC As reflected by our UTS Projects, we partner with academics in all faculties who are interested to deploy our analytics feedback tools to their students. In addition, central to CIC's mission is working with other UTS researchers and professional business units who might benefit from our analytics expertise. Our educational technologies are adaptable to other domains, and we have a Data Scientist who can provide statistical and machine learning input ...

Connected Learning Analytics (CLA) Toolkit

Learning Analytics in the wild... because people can learn online anywhere, at any time, using multiple tools and resources Most learning analytics tools provide information about a student's interactions within one learning environment, such as a Learning Management System (LMS), or eBook reader. But we know that people can learn anywhere, at any time, using multiple tools and resources. We use videos from Youtube, discussions with our friends and colleagues on Facebook, and online communities ...

Are you coming to LAK18?

Things are ramping up to the 8th International Learning Analytics & Knowledge Conference (LAK18), which comes to Sydney next March, the first time it has been hosted in the southern hemisphere. LAK is the primary research conference in the field, and the official conference of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR).   CIC’s Director Simon Buckingham Shum helped to found the first LAK in 2011, is a former Vice-President of SoLAR, and is serving as Co-Chair of the LAK18 s...

CIC collaborates with UTS:Law for writing interventions

CIC researchers are collaborating with the UTS Faculty of Law on a project to teach undergraduate law students how to improve their academic essay writing. Students learn the use of rhetorical structures and discourse markers, which guide the reader through the flow of a text using linguistic cues. They also learn self-assessment and revision skills to apply on their essay writing using several writing tasks guided by an online tool. CIC PhD student Shibani Antonette has developed this online to...

Visualisations to make Graduate Attributes Visible for Reflection

The challenge of supporting student learning in capstones is common to courses across UTS. While students work independently or in teams on their specifically configured projects, the value of ongoing engagement with their teachers and peers is sometimes hard to demonstrate.  We have made inroads in supporting students in these contexts by building a tool for students to actively reflect on their Graduate Attributes as they write about and reflect on their projects. We have built a Participator...

Towards Contested Collective Intelligence

As society's problems get only more complex (not just more complicated), there is growing interest in how we can blend "the cloud with the crowd" — the best of machine intelligence and human intelligence. Specifically, complex, wicked problems are never resolvable by individuals analysing a problem and announcing the solution. Multiple perspectives are needed, and engaging stakeholders in helping to define the problem, never mind deciding what might count as an acceptable solution, is critical. ...

Addressing educators’ concerns about Learning Analytics

It was a pleasure to spend Tuesday afternoon in Melbourne at the Assessment Research Centre (Director, Sandra Milligan) and Centre for the Study of Higher Education (Director, Gregor Kennedy). There is such a breadth and depth of work in these centres, and I met an extraordinary range of researchers. They invited me to address the concerns that many educators have around "Learning Analytics" — the application of data science to educational data, so here goes... Teaching, Assessment and Learning...
